About Us

Mark Close is located half a mile beyond the market town of Alston, Cumbria; in the heart of The North Pennines AONB. We have two different self-catering holiday cottages available; a nine bedroom traditional farmhouse and a cosy one bedroom cottage. Mark Close Farmhouse is a great holiday rental for groups of families and friends, whilst Mark Close Milking Parlour offers an ideal rental for couples who would prefer peace & quiet. Both holiday lets are dog friendly.

COVID-19 UPDATE: Due to the Government’s new law regarding “the rule of 6” we are unable to rent The Farmhouse to groups of more than 6 people for the near future. Therefore, we are offering The Farmhouse for groups of upto 6 people (or a larger household bubble) with lowered prices reflecting the new maximum occupancy.

A fantastic base to explore The North Pennines AONB & beyond!

Mark Close is ideally located to explore the North Pennines AONB and is within easy reach of The Lake District National Park, The Solway Coast AONB and Northumberland National Park.

As well as numerous national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty that are within easy reach; other exciting places of interest include Hadrian’s Wall, Kielder Forest Park, The Scottish Borders, the vibrant/historic cities of Newcastle & Carlisle and numerous market towns such as Hexham, Barnard Castle & Penrith.

 

The Farmhouse

Mark Close Farmhouse is a traditional 18th century farmhouse. Consisting of 9 bedrooms the property can accomodate up to 21 people and you’re more than welcome to bring up to four dogs (subject to an additional fee of £20 per dog) .

The bedrooms are arranged as 2 family rooms (each consisting of 1 single & 1 double bed), 2 double rooms, 4 twin rooms and 1 bunk room (a double bottom bunk & a single top bunk). There are 5 shower/bathrooms (one of which is en-suite).

The farmhouse has a large enclosed garden with a number of picnic benches as well as a patio area with a BBQ and further seating.

Located in the heart of The North Pennines AONB, Mark Close is your perfect home away from home to explore all the beautiful countryside that is on offer right on the doorstep.

The Milking Parlour

Mark Close Milking Parlour was orignally a working  dairy milking parlour and converted into a cottage in the early 2000’s, it consists of 1 bedroom. The cottage can accomodate 2 people and you’re more than welcome to bring up to 2 dogs (subject to an additional fee of £20 per dog).

The milking parlour has an enclosed private garden with a patio and lawned area, the garden backs onto open farmland that is regularly grazed by a flock of sheep. The garden is a popular haunt for various garden birds, pheasants and woodpeckers.
